What is Finasteride?

Finasteride is a prescription-only treatment, taken once daily, to reduce the progression of male hair loss, and even stimulate new hair growth in men with mild to moderate hair loss. Finasteride has a high success rate in men with mild to moderate hair loss, but of course there is no guarantee that the treatment will work for everyone.

Side effects may include a rash, reduced sex drive, erection problem or tenderness on or around the nipples. Very rarely, sexual side effects can remain after stopping medication. Please read the product information leaflet for further information.

If for the above reasons you are not able to buy Finasteride online, you should visit your GP who will be able to offer you advice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Am I suitable to use Finasteride?

Some people are not suitable for treatment with Finasteride. These include:

  • Women. Only men should take Finasteride tablets for hair loss treatment.
  • Men with rapid and sudden loss of hair, patches of hair loss, or inflammation on the scalp.
  • Men who have previously had an allergic reaction to Finasteride.
  • If you have ever or are you currently receiving treatment for depression or any other mental illness

Finasteride should not be taken if you are taking Proscar (or finasteride) or another 5 alpha-reductase inhibitor usually used to treat an enlarged prostate e.g. Avodart (Dutasteride).

How long does it take finasteride to work?

The medication is taken once a day and you should see results within a few months, when the loss of hair slows down or stops. Hair regrowth can begin after three months but you may not see the full effects of the treatment for two years. Finasteride is a long-term treatment and if you wish to maintain the benefits and results of the treatment, you must continue to take it.

What Conditions should it not be taken for?

Finasteride should not be taken if you suffer from any of the following conditions:

  • High blood pressure.
  • Prostate disease.
  • Suffer from depression and/or suicidal tendencies.
  • If you have experienced changes in your breast tissue, such as sensitivity, swelling, tenderness, lumps or nipple discharge?
  • If you have been diagnosed with or told you are at risk of having male breast cancer?
How effective is Finasteride?

Finasteride has a high success rate in men with mild to moderate hair loss, but of course there is no guarantee that the treatment will work for everyone.

How long does treatment last?

Treatment is long-term and if you stop taking Finasteride tablets you will slowly start to lose any hair you have gained whilst taking the drug (over the course of six to nine months).
