Information about Jet Lag Treatment
- What’s in jet-lag treatment?
- Will it work?
- Is it safe?
- Are there any side effects?
- How do I take melatonin?
- What else can I do to manage jet lag?
The treatment contains the hormone melatonin. This hormone is naturally produced in the body and levels rise as night falls and we approach sleep. Levels drop again in bright light during the day.
Studies show mixed results. Some show melatonin helps you fall asleep faster and wake up less, but other studies show no benefit.
It is safe to take melatonin for a few days to help you adjust to a new time zone.
Melatonin is not licensed for use to treat jet lag, but it is licensed to treat insomnia in people over age 55.
Side effects are rare but can include nausea, abdominal pain and unusual dreams.
Take one tablet before bedtime for 2-4 days after you arrive in your destination.
Given time, people adjust to their new time zone and jet lag gradually wears off over a few days to weeks. The most important thing to help you adjust is to make sure you are exposed to light during the day.
